Selection of a pocket knife as small a matter it seems is not, choosing a pocket knife is very important especially if you are to choose according to your own characteristics. Selection of a folding knife deserves a lot more importance then people tend to give it to. For many people, the best knife is the one which pleases their eyes the most, or the one that would look cool on them but this very disappointing. It should not be an arbitrary process but should be dealt with proper care and understanding.
Types of Knives
There are quite a few things you need to keep in mind during its selection. First, is the type? There are mainly two types, slip joint-knives and lock-blade knives. A lock-blade knife is more expensive than the slip-joint knife. The reason being that in a lock-blade knife, the blade gets locked into proper position thus preventing any sort of accident whereas in a slip-joint knife there is a spring to hold the blade in position which is not as safe as the lock-blade knife.
Types of Blades
Another important factor which should be considered while choosing the best pocket knife for you is the type of blade. There are two basic types of steel used as blades in the knives: Carbon steel and stainless steel. Both the types have their perks, a carbon steel consisting of a mixture of carbon and iron is important because a mixture of these metals keeps the edges of the knives sharp. Stainless steel on the other hand with 10 to 20 percent additional chromium in it is important because it does not rust.
While selecting a pocket knife you are advised to keep away from carbon steel as much as you can. Although there are few carbon steel knives which are manufactured with extra care and can be very useful too. Mostly the blades are mass-manufactured with companies buying raw steel from other companies and then sharpen it and give it shape to be used in a knife. This mass-production reduces the price of the knives but does not produce the best of the blades.
Types of Handles
Last but not least important factor taken into consideration while selecting a knife is the type of handle. There are many types of handles: wood, leather, rubber, metal, plastic. Rubber is quite good because it gives you a very good grip but then it won’t last as long as plastic or metal. Wood is another great handle because it looks stunning in its own way but the best choice is leather, although it is very difficult t to find. If you choose a pocket knife with extra care and taking minor details into attention you can have the best pocket knife in the world.
